Gin, Dogs and Charity: The Best of Three
Over 50 sausage dogs from across the country flocked to Persie Distillery to celebrate the launch of Dachshund Gin Liqueur this week.
The family-run stables-turned-distillery in Glenshee has teamed up with renowned dog rescue charity PADS to raise funds for unwanted dogs by creating a family of ‘dog gins’ – with different styles of gin reflecting different breeds.
Its latest expression, Dachshund, is a liqueur made using freshly pressed limes with fruit left over from the distillery’s award-winning Zesty Citrus Gin. Like the breed, Dachshund Gin Liqueur is the perfect balance of sweet and sharp: bursting with zest, it has a long body and is best served short!
Simon Fairclough, Distiller and Managing Director, explains: “Now gin lovers can help to raise funds for animal welfare the next time they have a hair of the dog. With five regular distillery dogs, it’s a perfect fit for us to team up with a small charity that makes a big difference to dogs’ lives. PADS’ stirling work in finding secure and loving homes for abandoned dogs is life-changing – for both the dogs and owners – and we are proud to be a partner.”
Dachshund Gin Liqueur follows the launch of Labrador Gin and Spaniel Gin in 2018. Both have been carefully created to reflect the breed: Labrador is traditional, soft in the mouth, mellow and warming – it is a classic juniper-forward profile with a seasoned coriander and cardamom finish; while Spaniel Gin is lively on the palate – spicy and spirited yet very gentle, the gin is made using mace and cinnamon to give it great warmth and intensity with a silky soft coating.
Persie Gin is named after the former Persie Hotel in Glenshee where the gin is made in a refurbished stables. For each bottle sold, Persie Distillery donates £1 to PADS, in addition to an annual lump sum, all of which will go towards providing care and shelter for abandoned dogs.
Alison Kennedy, Director at PADS, says: “‘All of us at PADS are delighted to have Persie Gin as our sponsor. We feel that this is an ideal partnership between a thriving Perthshire business and one of the county’s best-known and best-loved charities.”
